Montana Tech Petroleum Engineering Admissions Info

Montana Tech was established in 1889 with a focus on Mining & Electrical Engineering. Today it offers over sixty degree programs and offers National Science Foundation scholarships to twenty deserving freshman students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, or STEM for short.

The university is ranked number one in CollegeNET’s rankings of universities with its Social Mobility Index (SMI), which seeks to show how well an institution advances lower income students to effective jobs. Additionally, Money Magazine has rated Montana Tech as the 23rd best public school in the country. Finally, another important note is that the Washington Post has rated the university as 6th in the country for students obtaining the highest starting salaries. This is a unique distinction as there are no Ivy League schools in the top 25 of this particular list.

The Petroleum Engineering program at Montana Tech is also well rated and currently focuses on the areas of Drilling, Reservoir Engineering, and Production with the current placement rate for its students at close to 100%. The department has an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) which is made up of participants from different areas of the Oil and Gas industry. The focus of the IAB is to advise updating curriculums to address current industry trends and requirements, offer better opportunities to students, and build the department’s reputation as a center of excellence in the field. Montana Tech currently offers both Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Petroleum Engineering and these come with both thesis and non thesis options.
